Cedarville Wins Greene County Battle

88-26. That was the Final Score of The Cedarville University (CU) Lady Yellow Jackets’ Home Game vs. The Wilberforce University (WU) Lady Bulldogs which took place back on Saturday, December 5, 2015. In just mere minutes, the rematch will take place. Today (Thursday, January 14, 2016) is a day which I have been eagerly anticipating. On the court of CU’s Callan Athletic Center (CAC), the rematch will be played. Can the WU Lady Bulldogs obtain some much-needed revenge? Allow me to be completely honest. Back on 12/05/2015, the Lady Bulldogs were embarrassed. From start to finish, they were totally dominated by one of the Best Women’s Basketball Programs in the entire country. Therefore, WU has a point to prove. The Lady Bulldogs have to prove to all of their supporters that they are a much better team than the one which previously stepped onto the basketball court of CAC. As far as the CU Lady Yellow Jackets go, they want to successfully get past this Non-Conference Game. Then, the Lady Yellow Jackets’ full-attention will focus on navigating through its Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) Schedule. The ideal landing spot is the GMAC Women’s Basketball Championship Game. If that happens, CU will have the opportunity to obtain its second, consecutive GMAC Women’s Basketball Championship.

Cedarville won the game’s tip-off. At 9:43, Wilberforce’s Defense kicks the ball out of bounds. The Lady Yellow Jackets maintained possession. Three seconds later (9:40), CU missed a shot (while positioned at the basket). At 9:19, the Lady Bulldogs missed a shot too. Finally, points were scored. At 9:01, Cedarville’s Kayla Linkous made a 2-Point Basket. Less than a minute later (8:16), WU’s Brooklynn Peterson made a 2-Point Basket. Soon thereafter, Linkous picked up another 2-Points. The Lady Bulldogs would not be outdone. At the 7:37 mark, the Lady Bulldogs’ Kendra Moss picks up 2-Points. From 7:19 to 6:40, Wilberforce committed 2-Turnovers. Cedarville committed 1-Turnover. With 6:17 on the clock, Peterson made a 2-Point Basket. WU possessed a 6-4 lead.

The Lady Bulldogs’ lead did not last long. In fact, it only lasted for 6-Seconds. At 6:11, Linkous made a 2-Point Basket. During the play, she was fouled. After Linkous successfully made 1-Foul Shot, the Lady Yellow Jackets possessed a 1-Point Lead (7-6).  With 5:55 remaining in the 1st Quarter, Cedarville’s Defense intercepted a pass. CU went on a 3-0 Scoring Run. Emily Williams picked up 2-Points. Wilberforce turned the ball over. At the 4:36 mark, a Media Timeout was called. Cedarville leads Wilberforce 10-6. Surprisingly, Wilberforce is hanging close to Cedarville. However, the Lady Yellow Jackets’ Offense is ruling the paint. All of their points have come from driving directly to the basket or passes to players at the basket. From 4:11 to 1:19, Wilberforce committed a whopping 5-Turnovers. Cedarville committed 1-Turnover. The Lady Yellow Jackets went on a 10-0 Scoring Run. Linkous and teammate Breanne Watterworth each scored 3-Points.

With 58.2 Seconds left in the 1st Quarter, WU’s Areona Hunter nailed a 3-Point Basket. Then, CU’s Kaitlyn Holm nailed a 3-Point Basket (41.6 Seconds). Finally, the Lady Yellow Jackets’ Kaysie Brittenham nailed a 3-Point Basket too (23.0 Seconds). At the end of the 1st Quarter, Cedarville leads Wilberforce 26-9. Cedarville is beginning to distance itself from Wilberforce. The Lady Yellow Jackets’ Offense is ruling the inside (at the basket). The Lady Bulldogs’ Defense has no answer. As the 2nd Quarter got underway, the Lady Yellow Jackets have possession of the ball. They go on to miss 2-Shot Attempts (from underneath the basket). At 9:09, Cedarville’s Christina McQueen made a 2-Point Basket. After the Lady Yellow Jackets turn the ball over, Wilberforce’s Diamond Wright picked up 2-Points. From 8:28 to 6:51, each team committed 1-Turnover. Cedarville went on a 6-0 run. Williams scored 4-Points. At the 6:36 mark, a Media Timeout was called. CU leads WU 34-11.

Cedarville’s Offense is still ruling the basket area. On most occasions, one of Cedarville’s players gets the ball at the basket. Good things end up happening. It is too easy. Wilberforce has no “Defensive Presence” at the basket whatsoever. From 6:25 to 4:26, the Lady Yellow Jackets committed 3-Turnovers. The Lady Bulldogs went on a 6-2 run. Jasmine Johnson and Brooklynn Peterson each nailed a 3-Point Basket. With 3:59 remaining in the 2nd Quarter, Watterworth made a 2-Point Basket. After each team committed 1-Turnover, Johnson made 1-Foul Shot (3:07). After each team committed 1-Turnover again, Brittenham made 1-Foul Shot. During the 2nd Quarter’s final 1:42, WU committed 2-Turnovers. CU committed 1-Turnover. The Lady Bulldogs’ Kendra Moss blocked a Shot Attempt, and she picked up a Steal too. Each team scored 3-Points. WU’s Areona Hunter made a 3-Point Basket. At the end of the First Half, Cedarville leads Wilberforce 42-21.

The story of the First Half is that Cedarville’s Offense is ruling the basket area. The Lady Yellow Jackets have made multiple mistakes. However, Wilberforce has barely capitalized off of Cedarville’s mistakes. On the other hand, Cedarville has done well with capitalizing off of Wilberforce’s mistakes. The only success which Wilberforce’s Offense has had is with 3-Point Shot Attempts. Other than limited success with that aspect, Wilberforce’s Offense is doing nothing right. Unlike the Lady Yellow Jackets, the Lady Bulldogs’ Offense has had no presence at the basket. Cedarville’s Defense is too strong. It is allowing no success at the basket. After halftime, Wilberforce started with possession of the ball. At 9:28, the Lady Bulldogs turned the ball over. From 9:13 to 6:35, WU committed 2-Turnovers. CU committed 1-Turnover. The Lady Yellow Jackets outscored the Lady Bulldogs 7-1. Watterworth scored 3-Points. CU leads WU 49-22.

At the 5:37 mark, Wilberforce’s Da’Sha’Nay Corley made a 2-Point Basket. After Williams picked up 2-Points, Peterson made a 2-Point Basket. With 4:22 remaining in the 3rd Quarter, Cedarville leads Wilberforce 51-26. The Lady Yellow Jackets are still in firm control of this game. Their control is just increasing. At 4:17, McQueen made a 2-Point Basket. With 4:13 on the scoreboard, a Media Timeout was called. The final 3:53 were all about CEDARVILLE. First, the Yellow Jackets’ Defense blocked a Shot Attempt (under the basket). Then, they stole the ball from Moss. The Lady Yellow Jackets outscored the Lady Bulldogs 4-2. At the end of the 3rd Quarter, CU leads WU 57-28. As the 4th Quarter got underway, Cedarville had possession of the ball. At 9:43, the Lady Yellow Jackets turned the ball over. Less than 1:00 later (8:57), Corley made a 2-Point Basket. Shortly thereafter, Cedarville turns the ball over again. Unfortunately, Wilberforce is unable to score. The Lady Yellow Jackets got the ball back. Linkous picks up 2-Points (8:16).

With 7:37 on the scoreboard, Johnson made a 2-Point Basket. Fifteen seconds later (7:22), Watterworth made a 2-Point Basket. During the play, she was fouled. After she made 1-Foul Shot, Cedarville took a 62-32 lead. From 6:02 to 3:52, Wilberforce committed 1-Turnover. Then, the Lady Yellow Jackets proceeded to go on a 9-0 run. Ellie Juengel nailed a 3-Point Basket. Abby Wolford; Emily Williams; and Kaitlyn Holm each picked up 2-Points. With 3:52 remaining in the game, a Media Timeout was called. CU possessed a 71-32 lead. From 3:12 to 1:48, Cedarville outscored Wilberforce 8-3.  Juengel nailed a 3-Point Basket. Whitney Robinson; Taylor Buckley; and Christina McQueen scored points too. Wilberforce’s Areona Hunter scored the Lady Bulldogs’ 3-Points. During the final 1:28, the game’s final points were scored. Wilberforce’s Da’Sha’Nay Corley and Diamond Wright each made one 2-Point Basket.  By the Final Score of 79-39, Wilberforce was defeated by Cedarville (for the second time this season). For the Lady Bulldogs, a Second Blowout Loss (to the Lady Yellow Jackets) meant that no revenge would be obtained.
