Lady Marauders Lose Another Game

Since THE Central State University (CSU) Lady Marauders last won a game, it has been more than a month. Saturday, December 5, 2015, was the date of the Lady Marauders’ last victory. By the Final Score of 75-60, CSU defeated Paine College. That game took place exactly where my present location happens to be. Currently, I am sitting inside of CSU’s Beacom-Lewis Gymnasium. Since 12/05/2015, the Lady Marauders have played three games. In all three games, the team was soundly defeated. Where do the Lady Marauders go from here? That is a great question. It is one that I do not possess the answer to. If I had the answer to that question and the answers to all of the Lady Marauders’ problems, I would share such information with the team itself and its coaching staff. I would make sure CSU’s Women’s Basketball Program was much better than it is. Just like last season, the Lady Marauders have been very up-and-down. So far this season, there have been more downs than ups. However, I truly believe one thing. The CSU Lady Marauders can be a much better team that would be more competitive and stable. I know that to be true. I watched the young women control and win two Preseason Games. In the team’s two Regular Season Home Victories, I noticed the same attributes. In order to bring out the very best in each of the team’s players, the coaching staff is responsible for that issue. The players themselves share some responsibility too.

Today (Thursday, January 7, 2016) is a brand-new day. In mere minutes, CSU will be facing the Clark-Atlanta University (CAU) Lady Panthers. Every difficulty, conflict, and issue which the Lady Marauders are experiencing all cannot be solved in today’s game. That process will require an adequate amount of time and attention. However, today’s game can go a long way with assisting that process. On the tip-off, Central State knocked the ball out of bounds. As a result, Clark-Atlanta was awarded possession of the ball. The Lady Panthers ended up missing two shots at the basket. Then, the Lady Marauders’ Mustafa Notter missed a 2-Point Shot Attempt. Both teams went on to each commit 1-Turnover apiece. At 8:49, the game’s first points were scored. CAU’s Sydni Davis picked up 2-Points. Seventeen seconds later (8:32), Notter made a 2-Point Basket. Notter soon missed an uncontested lay-up. From 7:40 to 6:12, the Lady Panthers went on a 7-0 Scoring Run. Mykala Jones scored 5-Points. Before a Media Timeout at 4:18, CSU’s Kourtni Perry went on a 5-2 run. Going into the Timeout, CAU led CSU 11-9.

The Lady Panthers’ small players are attacking the basket. Against the bigger players of Central State, Clark-Atlanta was doing that. At one point, CAU possessed a 7-Point Lead. However, CSU came back. The game’s pace has become totally fast. At first, the Lady Panthers was the only fast team. At the 4:09 mark, the Lady Marauders made a 3-Point Basket. With a 3-Point Basket of her own, Davis countered the Lady Marauders’ conversion. After CSU’s Shannon DeFoe picked up 2-Points, each team committed 1-Turnover. Then, the Lady Panthers nailed a 3-Point Basket. With 2:01 on the clock, CSU’s Ashley Dennis made a 2-Point Basket. Before a Timeout (1:38), Davis made a 2-Point Basket. After the Timeout, CAU’s Defense made a block at the basket. CSU turned the ball over. The Lady Panthers went on an 8-0 run. Davis and her teammate Gia Banks each made a 3-Point Basket. With 0.9 Seconds remaining in the 1st Quarter, the Lady Marauders’ Meshia Smith hit a 3-Point Basket. At the end of the 1st Quarter, CAU leads CSU 27-19.

In order to open up a small lead, the Lady Panthers have utilized the 3-Point Basket. Central State cannot stop them from being successful from 3-Point Range. After the beginning of the 2nd Quarter, Perry was standing at the basket. To her dismay, her 2-Point Basket was no good. Clark-Atlanta missed a 2-Point Basket too. At 9:12, CSU’s Ghameerah McCullers picked up 2-Points. From 8:51 to 4:45, the Lady Marauders committed 5-Turnovers. The Lady Panthers turned the ball over once. CAU outscored CSU 9-2. With 4:45 remaining in the 2nd Quarter, a Media Timeout was called. CAU possessed a 36-23 lead. During the First Half’s final 3:42, CSU’s Turnover Issues continued to increase. The Lady Marauders committed 4-Turnovers. The Lady Panthers went on a 10-1 run. At the end of the First Half, Clark-Atlanta leads Central State 46-24.

Thus far, this has been a very one-sided game. Clark-Atlanta is in firm control of this game. The Lady Panthers have the speed advantage, and they are using it very well. Central State cannot slowdown CAU’s speed. For the purpose of good shots, the Lady Panthers are using speed to attack the basket. Against the Lady Marauders’ taller players, CAU’s smaller players are not afraid to attack the basket. For CAU, the 3-Point Basket has been extremely deadly!!! From 3-Point Range, the Lady Panthers were an incredible 7 of 9. In order to deal with this negative issue, CSU’s Defense does not possess the proper solution. The 3-Point Basket is the #1 Reason for CAU’s 22-Point Lead. Last but certainly not least, CSU has had a very poor shooting performance. That has not helped matters whatsoever. As the 3rd Quarter got underway, Central State has possession of the ball. At 9:50, CSU misses a 2-Point Basket. Four seconds later (9:46), Clark-Atlanta committed a Traveling Violation (Turnover).

At the 9:43 mark, Perry made a 2-Point Basket. From 8:55 to 7:25, Central State committed 3-Turnovers. Clark-Atlanta committed 2-Turnovers. Each team scored 2-Points apiece. Davis went on to score her team’s next 4-Points. Before the Lady Panthers turned the ball over at 6:17, the Lady Marauders put 3-Points onto the scoreboard. With 5:52 on the clock, Smith picked up 2-Points. With 2-Foul Shots, Jones matched Smith’s conversion. After the Lady Panthers committed a Traveling Violation (Turnover), a Media Timeout was called. CAU leads CSU 54-33. Sandwiched in-between 1-Turnover (by each team), CAU’s Siera Bubb made a 2-Point Basket. The 3rd Quarter’s final 2:50 were littered with Turnovers. Each team committed 2-Turnovers apiece. CSU outscored CAU 8-3. CSU’s Bria Spaulding scored 5-Points. At the end of the 3rd Quarter, CSU trails CAU 59-41.

To start the 4th Quarter, the Lady Panthers had possession of the ball. At 9:43, Nekia Sockwell made a 2-Point Basket. DeFoe went on to pick up 2-Points. Eventually, Central State turned the ball over. At the 8:56 mark, a Timeout was called. After the Timeout, the Lady Marauders continued to regress. From 8:40 to 6:02, the Lady Marauders committed 3-Turnovers. The Lady Panthers outscored them 9-1. CAU’s lead grew to 70-44. It was soon CAU’s turn to have a Major Turnover Problem. From 5:40 to 4:40, the Lady Panthers committed 4-Turnovers. The Lady Marauders went on a 7-0 run. With 4:40 remaining in the game, a Media Timeout was called. The Lady Panthers lead the Lady Marauders 70-51. After the Timeout, the Lady Panthers’ Turnover Difficulties continued.

From 4:36 to 3:01, Clark-Atlanta committed 2-Turnovers. Central State had 1-Turnover. CSU outscored CAU 7-2. At the 3:01 mark, a Timeout was called. By 14-Points (72-58), CSU trailed CAU. After the Timeout, the Lady Marauders went on to turn the ball over twice. The Lady Panthers had 1-Turnover. With 2:36 remaining in the game, Sockwell made a 2-Point Basket. For the remainder of the game, CSU would not score again. CAU ended the game on an 8-0 Scoring Run. By the Final Score of 80-58, Clark-Atlanta dealt Central State another embarrassing, blowout loss. In order to turn their season around, I really have no clue (as to what the Lady Marauders can do). The 2015-2016 Season is just becoming one, big disgrace. I know that sounds harsh. However, that is the only way to describe the disarray within Central State University’s Women’s Basketball Program. Although I do not know how the Lady Marauders can fix their negative issues, I do know one thing. The entire team (and its coaching staff) all have some soul-searching to do. Every individual needs to take a long look into the nearest mirror.

Lady Marauders Lose A Nightmare

At this current moment in time, THE Central State University (CSU) Lady Marauders’ 2015-2016 Season Record sits at 3-4. Although that record could be better, it is a vast improvement over last season (2014-2015). Plain and simple, this season, the Lady Marauders are a much better team. To be completely honest, I am surprised. Last season, the Lady Marauders were an up-and-down team. If you do not know what that means, please allow me to explain. At various times, CSU would lose to teams which it should have defeated. On other occasions, CSU would go out and be able to compete with such strong teams as Cedarville University (CU). In 2014-2015, the Lady Yellow Jackets and the Lady Marauders played one another in three games. Two of the three games were very close. One of the games was an “Overtime Thriller.” The other was a 7-Point Playoff Game (Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament). Although CSU lost all three games, it proved one point. The Lady Marauders have the ability to compete with one of the best teams in the entire country. On a consistent basis, CSU has to always play in that manner. Nothing less should ever be acceptable.

Make no mistakes about it. This season, the CSU Lady Marauders can get up-and-down the basketball court. The team can run; has power; and possesses speed. Last season, CSU did not always possess that combination (on a consistent basis). That issue must change. What will today’s (Monday, December 7, 2015) game be like? If the Claflin University (CU) Lady Panthers have their way, the CSU Lady Marauders will have a very bad day. Central State won the game’s tip-off. At 9:41, Claflin committed a Defensive Foul. Five seconds later (9:36), CSU’s Kourtni Perry picked up 2-Points. After CU committed an Offensive Foul, Perry picked up another 2-Points. At the 8:22 mark, the Lady Marauders’ Offense turned the ball over. Then, the Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Marauders 7-4. CSU turned the ball over twice. CU committed 1-Turnover.

With 5:07 on the clock, CSU’s Shannon DeFoe made a 2-Point Basket. During the play, she was fouled. After DeFoe successfully made the Foul Shot, the Marauders took an 11-7 lead. CU followed that up with a 2-Point Basket. From 4:29 to 3:24, CSU committed 2-Turnovers. CU had 1-Turnover. With 3:24 remaining in the 1st Quarter, a Media Timeout was called. CSU led CU 11-9. For Shot Attempts, CSU is having success going to the basket. While at the basket, the Lady Marauders’ best bet is to put the ball into Perry’s hands. When she is at the basket, she cannot be stopped. The Lady Marauders have attacked the basket well. Claflin has been successful shooting away from the basket. The Lady Panthers have not displayed much of an inside presence. Twenty seconds after the Timeout (3:04), the Lady Panthers’ Briana Chisolm made a 2-Point Basket.

Sandwiched in-between a Turnover by each team, CU committed a Defensive Foul. CSU turned the ball over again. The Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Marauders 8-2. Chisolm and teammate Shaniece Brown each nailed a 3-Point Basket. With no time remaining on the clock, Brown made her 3-Point Basket. At the end of the 1st Quarter, CU leads CSU 19-13. The story of the 1st Quarter is simply this. Central State has ruled going to the basket. Claflin has ruled the shooting away from the basket aspect. At 9:49 of the 2nd Quarter, the Marauders missed a Deep Shot. The Lady Panthers obtained the Defensive Rebound. CSU soon stole the ball from them. Then, CU ended up intercepting a pass. CSU committed a Defensive Foul. At 8:42, Chisolm found herself at the Free Throw Line. Unfortunately, she was unable to make a Foul Shot.

At the 8:23 mark, CSU’s Bria Spaulding went up for a Shot Attempt. However, her attempt was blocked. From 8:17 to 7:36, the Lady Marauders committed 2-Turnovers. The Lady Panthers had 1-Turnover. After each team made 1-Foul Shot, CSU’s Brianye Copeland obtained a Steal. She ended up making a 2-Point Basket. With 4:45 remaining in the 2nd Quarter, the Lady Marauders’ Meshia Smith stole the ball too. With an assist from Smith, Destinee Russell picked up 2-Points. At 4:15, a Timeout was called. Claflin leads Central State 20-18. Central State has to play better Perimeter Defense. Claflin is shooting well from the perimeter. On too many occasions, the Lady Panthers are being left open for deep shots. Other than Perry, the Lady Marauders need to rebound better. After the Timeout, CU committed 2-Turnovers. CSU committed 1-Turnover.

With 2:41 remaining in the 2nd Quarter, the Lady Panthers made a 2-Point Basket. After a Timeout (2:07), the Lady Marauders’ LaKayra Carlisle picked up 2-Points. During the process, she was fouled. Carlisle successfully made her Foul Shot. During the final 1:07, each team scored 3-Points. At the end of the First Half, Claflin possessed a 1-Point Lead (25-24).  During the last 4:15 of the half, Central State turned up its intensity. On both sides of the ball, that was the case. The Lady Marauders’ Meshia Smith has become a strong force. By obtaining rebounds; steals; and performing assists, she has done such. The Lady Marauders have to work on Turnovers and Missed Foul Shots. As the 3rd Quarter got underway, Central State had possession of the ball. At 9:46, Ghameerah McCullers went to the basket. As she went up, she made a Shot Attempt. The shot missed the basket.

From 8:43 to 6:04, the game became a Major Turnover Party.” CSU committed 2-Turnovers. CU committed a whopping 4-Turnovers. The Lady Panthers went on a 4-0 Scoring Run. With 4:48 remaining in the 3rd Quarter, a Media Timeout was called. Thus far in the 3rd Quarter, the Lady Marauders have not scored. They get good looks at the basket. However, the ball is not going through the hoop. Four seconds after the Timeout (4:44), the Lady Marauders finally scored. Jordyn Bond made 2-Foul Shots. CSU trailed CU by 6-Points (32-26). From 4:20 to 2:56, each team scored 5-Points. After that period, each team went on to turn the ball over once. During the final 1:01, CU went on a 6-0 Scoring Run. At the end of the 3rd Quarter, CU leads CSU 43-31.

After a slow start, Central State managed to get back into the game. However, Claflin has been pulling away because of CSU’s turnovers. At 9:22 of the 4th Quarter, Bond made a 2-Point Basket. That conversion must have angered CU. From 9:08 to 8:36, the Lady Panthers went on a 9-0 Scoring Run. At 8:36, a Timeout was called. The Lady Marauders have completely fallen apart. This game is OVER! From 8:18 to 5:21, the Lady Marauders outscored the Lady Panthers 8-7. At the 5:12 mark, a Media Timeout was called. At a rapid pace, CSU is turning the ball over. For the Lady Marauders, the game has gotten EMBARRASSINGLY BAD! The game continued to go further downhill. During the final 4:25, CU outscored CSU 12-3. At the end of an embarrassing game, Central State went down in defeat. The Final Score was Claflin 73 and Central State 44.

Lady Marauders Get On Track

After more than a month, I finally find myself back where I belong. Currently, I am sitting inside of Central State University’s (CSU) Beacom-Lewis Gymnasium (BLG). Today (Saturday, November 28, 2015), the CSU Lady Marauders’ Basketball Team will play host to “The Rock” of Slippery Rock University (SRU). This is CSU’s First Home Game of The 2015-2016 Season. Coming into the ensuing game, the Lady Marauders’ Overall Season Record sits at 1-3. Seven days ago (Saturday, November 21, 2015), CSU played in a hard-fought, Double Overtime game against Lindsey Wilson College (LWC). By only 4-Points (96-92), the Lady Marauders lost the game. Therefore, I must wonder about something. What is the current mindset of the young women? Dealing with such a devastating loss can take its toll on the mind, body, and soul. That is one of the reasons, as to why I am so interested in today’s contest. Will the CSU Lady Marauders allow their latest defeat to linger into today’s game? If so, they will have a difficult time dealing with Slippery Rock. While I do not know the team’s current mental & physical condition, I do know the following. All of the Lady Marauders’ games have been on the ROAD. Now, CSU has returned HOME!

Just because the team has returned to campus, I am not saying VICTORY is guaranteed! Home Court Advantage has its good points and its bad points. Without talking to any player on CSU’s Women’s Basketball Team, I am very confident with believing one aspect. In front of their Home Fans, the Lady Marauders will not want to exit BLG with a loss in tow. The team is tired of losing. Today, the young women will leave everything on the court. Will the entire situation work out for the CSU Lady Marauders, or will effects from the team’s Double Overtime Loss find a place in today’s game? In a couple of hours, that question is about to be answered. Central State won the game’s tip-off. From 9:50 to 9:01, the game consisted of turnovers-only. CSU committed 3-Turnovers. Slippery Rock committed 2-Turnovers. Finally, at 8:48, the game’s first points were scored. The Rock’s Megan Hardiman made a 2-Point Basket. After the Lady Marauders’ Jordyn Bond made a nice block, Hardiman scored again. This time, she nailed a 3-Point Basket (8:22). Soon thereafter (7:43), CSU’s Brianye Copeland picked up 2-Points. Sandwiched in-between 2-Turnovers (one by each team), Bond made 1-Foul Shot.

At the 6:27 mark, the Lady Marauders’ Kayla Horn made 1-Foul Shot. From 6:17 to 5:03, SRU outscored CSU 6-3. The Lady Rock’s Audrey Stapleton nailed two 3-Point Baskets. With 4:28 remaining in the 1st Quarter, a Media Timeout was called. Thus far, this has been a “Very Defensive Game.” CSU is missing Foul Shots. Also, the Lady Marauders are leaving SRU’s players open for easy 3-Point Baskets. Twenty-six seconds after the Timeout (4:02), Bond makes a 2-Point Basket. Then, SRU’s Erica Aiello makes a 2-Point Basket too. During the process, Aiello was fouled. She stepped to the Free Throw Line, and she successfully converted her 1-Foul Shot. From 3:30 to 1:54, SRU committed 2-Turnovers. CSU committed 1-Turnover. Turnovers did not hinder Slippery Rock’s momentum. The team went on an 11-3 Scoring Run. Going into a Timeout, Slippery Rock led Central State 25-12.

During the final 1:41, SRU outscored CSU 7-3. At the end of the 1st Quarter, Slippery Rock led Central State 32-15. As the 2nd Quarter got underway, Bond found herself at the Free Throw Line. To her dismay, she was unable to make a Foul Shot. At 9:08, the Lady Marauders’ Kourtni Perry picked up 2-Points. Then, Perry blocked a shot (in the paint). Before a Timeout at 8:08, Copeland was unable to make a Foul Shot. At the 7:46 mark, Perry was near the basket. She made a block, and she stole the ball. Unfortunately, she accidentally stepped out of bounds. As a direct result, CSU turned the ball over. Soon, the game turned messy again. SRU turned the ball over twice. Then, Perry obtained a Defensive Rebound. With 6:07 on the clock, the Lady Marauders turned the ball over. From 5:41 to 5:05, CSU’s Ashley Dennis outscored SRU 5-0.

With 4:29 remaining before the Halftime Break, Slippery Rock turned the ball over. However, the team was in the midst of outscoring Central State 5-3. Aiello made 3-Foul Shots. Perry scored all three of CSU’s points. During the final 2:59 (of the 2nd Quarter), SRU committed 3-Turnovers. CSU turned the ball over once. The Lady Marauders’ lone turnover did not hurt them. On the other hand, Slippery Rock’s turnovers significantly had a negative impact on the team. The Lady Marauders exploded for an 11-2 Scoring Run. At the end of the First Half, SRU leads CSU 39-36. Now, there is some confusion with the game’s actual score. While Central State’s Sports Information Director has CSU leading the game 37-36, I have Slippery Rock leading CSU 39-36. While my scorekeeping is accurate, I am not in charge of the Official Record Books. Therefore, I will abide by exactly what was told to me. Central State is winning the game 37-36.

At 9:38 of the 3rd Quarter, Slippery Rock’s Ciara Patterson nailed a 3-Point Basket. Central State’s Copeland ends up making 1-Foul Shot. Before the first minute was up (9:01), SRU turned the ball over. From 8:53 to 5:15, CSU was “Red-Hot!” The Lady Marauders went on an absolute tear. They outscored Slippery Rock 14-3. During the run, CSU’s LaKayra Carlisle hit two 3-Point Baskets. At the 5:11 mark, a Timeout was called. Carlisle is on FIRE!!! She is in a zone. SRU cannot stop her! Before a Media Timeout was called (4:05), SRU’s Lexi Carpenter outscored CSU 4-2. Slippery Rock is still hanging in there. The team is not allowing Central State to run away with the game. By the score of 54-46, CSU was still leading SRU.

Twenty seconds after the Media Time ended (3:45), Slippery Rock was penalized for a Traveling Violation. With 3:30 remaining in the 3rd Quarter, Central State’s Ashley Dennis hit a 3-Point Basket. Before another Timeout was called (1:45), SRU committed 2-Turnovers. A Jump Ball ended up being called. The Rock maintained the ball’s possession. Aiello went on to nail a 3-Point Basket. For the remainder of the 3rd Quarter, CSU outscored SRU 6-4. At the end of the 3rd Quarter, Slippery Rock trailed Central State by 10-Points (63-53).  For the first 1:46 (of the 4th Quarter), scoring was even (4-4). Then, the Lady Marauders turned the ball over. They had a Block (in the paint) too. From 7:38 to 3:56, CSU committed 2-Turnovers. SRU went on an Offensive Tear! They severely shrunk CSU’s lead. Slippery Rock went on a 9-2 run. Carpenter and teammate Audrey Stapleton each scored 4-points apiece. Central State’s lead was now down to 3-Points (69-55).

Before a Timeout at 49.6 Seconds, Central State countered Slippery Rock’s run with a 10-6 run. The Lady Marauders’ lead was back to 7-Points (79-72). During the run, Perry scored 6-Points.  During the remainder of the game, scoring was just about even. CSU outscored SRU 10-9. Bond scored 4-Points. The Lady Marauders’ Shannon DeFoe scored 3-Points. Carpenter scored 5-Points. With 38.5 Seconds remaining in the game, Carpenter nailed a 3-Point Basket. During the play, she was fouled. After making 1-Foul Shot, Carpenter had just completed a 4-Point Play.  At the 23.6 Seconds mark, SRU’s Ciara Patterson attempted a 3-Point Basket. The Shot Attempt was unsuccessful. However, she was fouled. Patterson went to the Free Throw Line. She only made 2-Foul Shots. At the end of an extremely hard-fought contest, Central State University arose victoriously. The Final Score was 89-81.

Lady Marauders Come Out On Top

As the common, longtime phrase goes, “Today is a brand-new day.” As far as THE Central State University’s (CSU) Women’s Basketball Team goes, that phrase relates to those young women quite well. In fact, that phrase should be embedded within the minds of each one of the Lady Marauders. Today (Saturday, December 5, 2015), the Lady Marauders will be taking the court. The opponent will be fellow Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) member The Paine College (PC) Lady Lions. In mere minutes, that should be where CSU’s complete focus lies. I fully understand that. However, I want to take a look back at this past Thursday night (December 3, 2015). At the end of the night, the CSU Lady Marauders lost to the Benedict College Lady Tigers 78-60. At Halftime, CSU trailed by only 4-Points (39-35). The question which I have is simply the following. How does one go from trailing by 4-Points to losing by 18-Points? The 18-Point Loss is what truly boggles my mind. Had the Lady Marauders lost by a closer margin, I would have been able to understand the defeat. Failure to control what took place in the Second Half is what really sticks to my mind. In the Second Half of any game, CSU has to do a much better job. As the Lady Marauders prepare to take the court tonight, I sure hope they realize that issue is very serious. If they have not adequately dealt with the issue, Paine College will exit Beacom-Lewis Gymnasium with a victory in tow.

Central State won the game’s tip-off. After missing 2-Shot Attempts, the Lady Marauders soon found themselves with the ball again. However, that Offensive Possession became a Turnover. The ball ended up going out of bounds. At 8:56, Paine College scored the game’s first points. The Lady Lions’ Tierra Boykin made a 2-Point Basket. For the Lady Marauders, Ghameerah McCullers picked up 2-Points too (8:27). After PC turned the ball over, CSU had possession again. With 7:49 on the clock, Jordyn Bond nailed a 3-Point Basket. From 7:29 to 6:27, PC committed 2-Turnovers. CSU committed 1-Turnover. After this series of Turnovers concluded, the Lady Marauders went on a 5-0 Scoring Run. McCullers made a 2-Point Basket. Kourtni Perry scored 3-Points. Each team would go on to obtain a Steal. Then, the Lady Marauders’ Destinee Russell made a 2-Point Basket. With 4:23 remaining in the 1st Quarter, a Timeout was called. CSU is leading PC 12-2.

Central State is completely dominating this game. The Marauders’ Defense has Paine College locked down. The Lady Lions cannot get anything going. Sixteen seconds after the Timeout (4:07), PC committed another Turnover. This time, the Lady Lions were penalized for a Traveling Violation. At 3:44, PC’s Janisha Wilkerson made a 2-Point Basket. Perry countered with 2-Points of her own. From 3:03 to 2:11, each team committed 2-Turnovers. Before the quarter ended, each team committed 1-Turnover. CSU outscored PC 4-1. With 11.5 Seconds remaining, one of the Lady Lions’ players was positioned at the basket. As she went up for a Shot Attempt, the Lady Marauders’ Defense blocked the ball out of the air. At the end of the 1st Quarter, CSU led PC 18-5. The Lady Marauders need to work on their Turnovers and Fouls. Otherwise, they are doing most things correctly.

At the 9:48 mark of the 2nd Quarter, CSU turned the ball over. The Lady Marauders committed a 3-Second Violation. From 9:37 to 9:20, PC went on a 4-0 run. During the run, the Lady Marauders had the ball stolen. CSU had its own run too. From 9:01 to 8:26, Bond outscored the Lady Lions 5-0. Five seconds later (8:21), PC turned the ball over. Then, CSU turned the ball over too. Both teams continued to struggle with Turnovers. From 8:04 to 4:14, PC committed a whopping 6-Turnovers. CSU had 2-Turnovers. The Lady Marauders outscored the Lady Lions 31-13. With 4:14 remaining in the 2nd Quarter, a Media Timeout was called. I have never witnessed so many Traveling Violations like I am seeing in this game. Both teams are having trouble with this issue.

Near the 4:00 mark (4:01), CSU’s Brianye Copeland made a 2-Point Basket. PC went on to outscore CSU 11-7. During that run, the Lady Marauders committed 3-Turnovers. At the end of the First Half, Central State leads Paine 40-24. Other than Turnovers; Fouls; and Free Throws, I do not see anything else which the Lady Marauders need to work on. As the 3rd Quarter got underway, CSU had possession of the ball. However, Perry missed a 2-Point Basket.  CSU soon had the ball again. This time, Shannon DeFoe picked up 2-Points. Although PC went on to commit 1-Turnover, the Lady Lions’ Ashley Watts outscored CSU 3-0.  From 8:07 to 6:03, each team committed 2-Turnovers. CSU went on a 4-0 run. At the 6:02 mark, a Media Timeout was called. After this Timeout, PC went on a 4-0 run. Then, the Lady Lions turned the ball over. With 4:57 on the scoreboard, another Media Timeout was called. CSU was leading PC 46-31.

From 4:48 to 3:23, PC committed 2-Turnovers. CSU had 1-Turnover. Each team scored 2-Points. Then, Janisha Wilkerson outscored CSU 5-1. Before a Timeout at 1:40, the Lady Lions trimmed the Lady Marauders’ lead to 10-Points (50-40). During the 3rd Quarter’s last 1:18, the Lady Marauders outscored the Lady Lions 3-2. At the end of the 3rd Quarter, CSU leads PC 53-42. Paine College is working its way back into the game. After the 4th Quarter started, PC had possession of the ball. The Lady Lions went on a 4-0 run. Although the Lady Marauders’ Turnover Problems continued, CSU outscored PC 5-0. From 6:58 to 4:37, PC outscored CSU 5-4. For the Lady Lions, Wilkerson scored 4-Points. Perry scored all of the Lady Marauders’ points. With 4:23 remaining in the game, a Timeout was called.

Ten seconds after the Timeout (4:13), CSU’s Defense made a Block at the basket. However, Wilkerson obtained the rebound. Then, she picked up 2-Points. A short time later (3:48), CSU’s Meshia Smith made a 2-Point Basket. At the 3:13 mark, Smith nailed a 3-Point Basket. For the remainder of the game, CSU committed 3-Turnovers. PC had 1-Turnover. CSU outscored PC 8-6. Copeland scored 3-Points. DeFoe hit a 3-Point Basket. At the end of the 4th Quarter, PC was unable to catch up to CSU. Therefore, the Lady Marauders won the game. The Final Score was Central State 75 and Paine College 60.

Lady Marauders Are Caught Slipping

Coming into tonight’s (Thursday, December 3, 2015) game, THE Central State University Lady Marauders possess an Overall 2015-2016 Season Record of 2-3. However, do not allow that record to fool you! The Lady Marauders are a good “Basketball Team.” After losing so many players to graduation (after The 2014-2015 Season concluded), I was under the impression that this would be a “REBUILDING YEAR.” To be perfectly honest, this is a rebuilding year. The team had to replace some key parts. Some of the graduated players (especially Iniquia Snell; Amanda Pierce; and Jasmine Cooper) were the Heart & Soul of CSU’s Basketball Team. They all had such a big-time effect on their team. Their accomplishments (while they were members of the CSU Lady Marauders) will never be forgotten. However, the Lady Marauders must move on. While that process was set to begin this season, I thought that the team would truly struggle. Although the season is still young, the team looks really good. To every, current, team member, I am quite certain that my words mean nothing to them. Improvements can always be made. The Win-Loss Record is not the best. Definitely, it could be better. As the season goes on, it will be very interesting to see how this current team evolves. All I know is the following. The CSU Lady Marauders are off to a positive start.

The ensuing game is the Lady Marauders’ first-ever game in a new conference (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference – SIAC). Today’s Home Opponent is Benedict College (BC). As the Lady Tigers come into Beacom-Lewis Gymnasium, they possess an Overall Season Record of 3-0. When they exit the gymnasium, will the Lady Tigers leave 4-0? It is up to CSU to prevent that from occurring. Benedict won the game’s tip-off. The Lady Tigers based their offense around the perimeter. It looked as if they wanted to attempt a 3-Point Basket. However, Central State’s Defense was not having it. At the 9:37 mark, BC’s Destiny Betts made a 2-Point Basket. After CSU committed 2-Turnovers, Betts picked up two more points. With 8:13 on the clock, CSU received its first points. Destinee Russell made a 2-Point Basket. It was the Lady Tigers’ turn to turn the ball over. Thirteen seconds later after BC’s Turnover (7:52), the Lady Marauders’ Kourtni Perry found herself at the Free Throw Line. She went on to make 1-Foul Shot.

From 7:08 to 5:02, CSU committed 3-Turnovers. However, BC managed to outscore CSU by only 1-Point (5-4). The Lady Tigers’ Dorothy Brown hit a 3-Point Basket. Perry scored the Lady Marauders’ 4-Points. With 4:41 remaining in the 1st Quarter, a Media Timeout was called. BC possessed a 2-Point Lead (9-7). I have noticed that Benedict wants to shoot from around the perimeter. Central State’s Defense has been very tight. The Lady Marauders are not allowing many perimeter shots. If so, shots have been mostly contested. The Lady Tigers have been forced to go inside. They have to go near the basket. If not near the basket, BC just has to be within 2-Point Range. Six seconds after the Timeout, a Jump Ball was called. CSU was awarded possession. A short time later, the Lady Marauders picked up 2-Points. By the score of 9-9, the game was now tied.

With 3:41 left in the 1st Quarter, CSU obtained a Steal. The Lady Marauders were unable to capitalize on their good Defensive Play. From 3:13 to 2:48, CSU committed 2-Turnovers. BC proceeded to go on a 7-0 Scoring Run. CSU did not lie down. The Lady Marauders continued to fight. During the final 2:22, the Lady Marauders outscored the Lady Tigers 10-7. Shannon DeFoe and LaKayra Carlisle each scored 3-Points. At the end of the 1st Quarter, BC led CSU 23-19.  Benedict’s Defense caused Central State to commit multiple turnovers. The Lady Tigers looked like they were going to open up a wide lead. Every time it looked that way, the Lady Marauders made a good play. As the 2nd Quarter got underway, Central State had possession of the ball. At 9:48, the Lady Marauders missed a 2-Point Basket. Benedict ends up getting the Defensive Rebound. However, the Lady Tigers missed a 3-Point Basket. At 8:55, BC turned the ball over.

At the 8:35 mark, CSU’s Ashley Dennis made a 2-Point Basket. Sixteen seconds later (8:19), BC’s Regime McCombs responded by nailing a 3-Point Basket. From 7:43 to 6:47, BC committed 3-Turnovers. CSU committed 1-Turnover. With 6:30 on the scoreboard, the Lady Marauders’ Ghameerah McCullers slid to the basket uncontested. She picked up 2-Points. Each team went on to commit 1-Turnover. Then, the Lady Tigers did it again. In fact, McCombs countered with a 3-Point Basket. Before a Media Timeout (at 4:50), only CSU scored. The Lady Marauders trailed the Lady Tigers by 4-Points (29-25).  Scoring for the remainder of the 2nd Quarter was dead-even. Each team scored 10-Points. At the end of the First Half, Benedict leads Central State 39-35. It is going to be interesting to see what Second Half Adjustments that each team will make.

Thus far, this game has been very good. Neither team has been able to separate itself from the other. For most of the First Half, Benedict looked like it would separate itself from Central State. Every time that happened, Central State would step up its Offensive Game. The Lady Marauders would keep the game at a reasonable pace. In the Second Half, CSU needs to do a better job of limiting the 3-Point Shot. For a while (especially in the 1st Quarter), CSU was not allowing BC to be comfortable (with attempting the 3-Point Basket). In the 2nd Quarter, Benedict has been able to attempt better shots (from 3-Point Range). With doing so, the Lady Tigers have been successful. The Lady Marauders have to play better Perimeter Defense. If not, this game has the potential to get out-of-hand. After the start of the 3rd Quarter, gameplay was quite messy. From 9:46 to 8:50, the following mistakes took place. BC committed a Defensive Foul. CSU committed 1-Turnover. BC had 2-Turnovers. Finally, CSU missed a 2-Point Basket.

Before a Media Timeout (4:22), Benedict committed 2-Turnovers. Central State committed 1-Turnover. Scoring was minimal. The Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Marauders 6-5. At one point, CSU’s Jordyn Bond hit a 3-Point Basket. At 4:22, BC led CSU 45-40. The game is still very tight. Central State is not allowing Benedict to separate itself. One issue which the Lady Marauders need to correct is Free Throw Shooting. The young women are just missing way too many Foul Shots. Of course, the Lady Tigers are having the same issue. However, BC is winning the game. CSU is trying to come from behind. Therefore, Foul Shots are extremely critical. Another Media Timeout took place at the 2:52 mark. Leading up to that point, BC went on a 5-0 Scoring Run. One of the Lady Tigers’ conversions was a deep 3-Point Basket (by Regime McCombs). BC’s lead was now 10-Points (50-40).

The 3rd Quarter’s last 2:41 was filled with Turnovers. Benedict committed 2-Turnovers. As far as Central State goes, the Lady Marauders committed a whopping 4-Turnovers! Each team scored 2-Points. The Lady Marauders are truly killing their chances of making this game close. In fact, they are helping the Lady Tigers’ lead to increase.  At the end of the 3rd Quarter, the Lady Tigers possess a 10-Point Lead (52-42). After the 4th Quarter got underway, BC further strengthened its lead. The quarter started with each team turning the ball over once. Then, BC outscored CSU 14-9. With 4:45 remaining in the game, a Media Timeout was called. The Lady Tigers’ lead was now 15-Points (66-51). Benedict is capitalizing off of Central State’s Turnovers. Therefore, the Lady Tigers have built up a double-digit lead. The Lady Marauders are having difficulties dealing with what the Lady Tigers are bringing.

CSU’s “Turnover Issues” never improved. For the remainder of the game, the Lady Marauders committed 3-Turnovers. BC only committed 1-Turnover. The Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Marauders 12-9. From 2:40 to 2:05, three, consecutive 3-Point Baskets were nailed. BC’s Dorothy Brown and teammate Regime McCombs were each responsible for one apiece. CSU’s Meshia Smith made a 3-Point Basket too. Eventually, the Lady Marauders ran out of time. A comeback was not possible. A victory was not going to happen. By the Final Score of 78-60, BC went on to win the game. I must give credit (where credit is due). The Lady Tigers won this game. That is a true fact. It cannot be changed. However, I feel this way. To a great extent, the Lady Marauders hurt themselves. A multitude of mistakes cost the Lady Marauders the game. For most of the game, CSU was within reach of BC’s lead. From the very end of the 3rd Quarter throughout the remainder of the game, BC took over firm control of the game. The Lady Tigers refused to give up any amount of control.

Lady Bulldogs Come Out Hot

For the Wilberforce University (WU) Lady Bulldogs, tonight (Tuesday, November 17, 2015) is a very interesting night. Tonight’s opponent (Cincinnati Christian University (CCU) Lady Eagles) brings along some baggage. Coming into the ensuing contest, CCU’s Overall Season Record is 1-6. I know what some of you are thinking. At 1-6, the Lady Eagles cannot possibly provide a tough challenge (for the Lady Bulldogs). I COMPLETELY DISAGREE! In fact, I honestly believe that CCU will prove to be a difficult team which to deal with. The following will prove just that. This past Saturday (November 14, 2015), the Lady Eagles won their first game (of The 2015-2016 Season). CCU defeated the Marygrove College (MC) Lady Mustangs 62-58. Going into that game, MC possessed an Overall Season Record of 3-2. The Lady Eagles’ defeat of the Lady Mustangs proves one fact. If CCU can compete with a good, winning team, then the Lady Eagles can compete with any team on their schedule. That statement alone is what makes CCU a very dangerous opponent. After beginning the season 0-6, CCU is now 1-6. The Lady Eagles are hungry. After proving to all of their doubters that they can win a game, the team wants more victories. The Lady Eagles do not want the winning to end. That is why I firmly believe CCU will be up for tonight’s game. As a direct result, WU will have to walk a fine line. The Lady Bulldogs must take their opponent very seriously. If not, a team will walk out of The Alumni Multiplex with a victory in tow. However, that team will just not be the WU Lady Bulldogs.

Cincinnati Christian won the game’s tip-off. The ball was passed to the right of the court. At 9:50, Wilberforce’s Kendra Moss was at the basket. She blocked a shot. The ball ends up going out of bounds. As a direct result, CCU maintains possession. However, the Lady Eagles are unable to score. Shortly after that, it was on. From 9:17 to 6:09, WU went on an absolute tear. The Lady Bulldogs went on an 11-0 Scoring Run. At the 5:50 mark, CCU finally ended the bleeding. The Lady Eagles’ Aly Balser made 1-Free Throw Attempt. The Lady Bulldogs’ lead was now 11-1. After Balser’s conversion, WU went on a 4-0 run. Da’Sha’Nay Corley and Diamond Wright each made a 2-Point Basket.

From 4:43 to 4:13, CCU committed 2-Turnovers. WU committed 1-Turnover. At 4:07, the Lady Eagles’ Macy Wingham made a 2-Point Basket. During the process, she was fouled. After Wingham successfully converted her Free Throw Attempt, the score was now WU-15 and CCU-4. With 3:19 remaining in the 1st Quarter, CCU’s Baylee Bennett knocks the ball loose from one of WU’s players. Bennett’s defensive play causes a Jump Ball. The Lady Bulldogs are awarded possession. Thirteen seconds later (3:06), the Lady Bulldogs picked up 2-Points. WU’s conversion led to CCU going on a 4-0 run. Lexie Doddridge was responsible for all of her team’s points. Also, she intercepted a pass too. How do the Lady Bulldogs respond? From 2:14 to 1:24, WU went on a 6-0 run. Wright; Moss; and Brooklynn Peterson each made a 2-Point Basket. Moss added in a steal too.

Once again, it was CCU’s turn to go on a run. During the final 51.0 Seconds of the 1st Quarter, the Lady Eagles outscored the Lady Bulldogs 5-0. At the end of the 1st Quarter, WU possessed a 23-13 lead. The Lady Bulldogs’ speed dictated the quarter. On both the offensive and defensive ends, WU went after the ball. Those young women were always attacking the ball. At the 9:11 mark of the 2nd Quarter, Peterson nailed a 3-Point Basket. CCU’s Brianna Ruffin countered with a 2-Point Basket. Then, WU’s Defense intercepted a pass. After that, the Lady Eagles did the same thing. CCU’s defensive play led to Ruffin picking up 2-Points. For her team, Ruffin was the one who stole the ball. Before a Timeout at 4:06, the Lady Bulldogs exploded! WU outscored CCU 12-3. WU’s “Power & Speed” are both dictating this game and its pace.

After the Timeout, WU’s good fortunes continued. The Lady Bulldogs outscored CCU 6-2. WU’s Brieanna Carter scored 5-Points. With a 4-2 run in tow, CCU ended the First Half. At Halftime, WU led CCU 46-26. WU’s “Power & Speed” have both dictated this First Half. The Lady Bulldogs possess those attributes. As a result, they are using those attributes to the fullest extent possible. Offensively and Defensively, WU is constantly going after the ball. The Lady Bulldogs are always around the ball. If they do not have the ball, then WU is looking for the ball. WU is attacking the ball. The Lady Bulldogs’ “Power” is putting them in the best positions (all over the court). The perfect example is the following. At the basket, Corley has used her power to do whatever she wants to do. She has been virtually unstoppable. All of the Lady Bulldogs each have used power and speed to get into the best positions for blocks; rebounds; shots; and steals. CCU is having a difficult time dealing with what WU is bringing. However, the Lady Eagles are not quitting and giving up. They are continuing to play extremely hard. They have had their positive moments. However, such opportunities have been far and in-between. Their spurts of looking like they are making a comeback have been quickly ended by the Lady Bulldogs.

After Halftime, Bennett nailed a 3-Point Basket. Then, her teammate (Balser) made a 2-Point Basket. The Lady Bulldogs quickly got back into the game. With the assistance of 3-Steals, WU went on a 7-0 run. At 6:02, CCU hit a 3-Point Basket. With 6:01 on the clock, a Timeout was called. After the Timeout, the Lady Eagles hit another 3-Point Basket. However, there was one problem. The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Eagles 6-3. Before another Timeout (4:26), CCU made a 2-Point Basket. By 20-Points (59-39), WU led CCU. After the Timeout, the Lady Eagles picked up two, quick steals. Then, the Lady Bulldogs obtained one too. During the 3rd Quarter’s last 3:03, CCU outscored WU 8-6. At the end of the 3rd Quarter, WU led CCU 65-47.

As the 4th Quarter got underway, the scoring remained fairly close. From 9:29 to 7:52, WU outscored CCU 4-3. At 7:52, a Timeout was called. After the Timeout, WU committed 8-Turnovers. CCU committed 2-Turnovers. During the process, the Lady Eagles caught fire. From 6:55 to 1:46, CU went on a 12-2 run. The Lady Eagles were playing so much better. In fact, they are the Second Half’s better team. During this half, the Lady Eagles have missed too many Foul Shots. That deficiency is hurting them. In order to remain in front, the Lady Bulldogs are doing just enough. During the final 1:25, WU closed out the game with a 3-0 run. By the Final Score of 74-62, the Lady Bulldogs went on to win the game.

Greeneview Decimates Xenia

Today (Saturday, November 21, 2015) is a very special day. This afternoon, the Xenia High School (XHS) Lady Buccaneers’ Basketball Team is hosting the Greeneview High School (GHS) Rams. Some people may be thinking, “What is so special about this matchup?” That question is easy to answer. Both XHS and GHS are Greene County, Ohio High Schools. In any sport, it is always a big deal whenever Greene County’s High Schools play one another. Some of the Greene County Athletic Matchups can be really intense. Some are more serious than others. Regardless of those aspects, all of the various matchups share one, common fact. “Bragging Rights are on the line.” For a period of time, the winners can brag about their victories. They can claim to be “The Kings Or Queens Of Greene County.” After everything that I have written thus far, some of you have to be wondering about the level of the rivalry which exists between XHS and GHS. While any of the athletic matchups (between the two institutions) is serious in nature, the rivalry is not very heated & intense. For example, the rivalries which XHS has with both Beavercreek High School and Fairborn High School are extremely heated & intense. XHS DOES NOT have a Love/Hate Relationship with either school. Although some friendships/other relationships do exist, the level of disdain is high. While XHS is not playing a hated rival today, the game will still be very competitive.

Greeneview won the game’s tip-off. At 7:52, Sabrina Saunders nailed a 3-Point Basket. Exactly one minute later (6:52), the Lady Rams’ Sydnie Sonneman hit a 3-Point Basket too. Sonneman goes on to make 2-Foul Shots (6:26). Then, Xenia commits 3-Turnovers. At 5:21, a Timeout is called. GHS possesses an 8-0 lead. The Lady Buccaneers are developing a “Turnover Problem.” Also, XHS’s Defense is leaving the Lady Rams open for shooting opportunities. After the Timeout through 3:19, the game becomes TURNOVER CITY! XHS commits 4-Turnovers. GHS commits 3-Turnovers. With 3:16 remaining in the 1st Quarter, a Timeout was called. Both teams are having major trouble with Ball Handling. After the Timeout, GHS’s Faith Strickle was fouled. She successfully converted 2-Foul Shots. The Lady Rams’ lead was now 10-0.

From 3:10 to 2:06, XHS turns the ball over twice. GHS capitalized off of the Lady Buccaneers turnovers. The Lady Rams added another 4-Points to their total. The remainder of the 1st Quarter saw each team score 2-Points. At the end of the 1st Quarter, GHS led XHS 16-2. In all facets of the game, the Lady Buccaneers are struggling. At 6:48 of the 2nd Quarter, the Lady Rams’ Jenna Basinger nailed a 3-Point Basket. Soon thereafter, XHS’s Charlie Stone makes a 2-Point Basket. At the 5:51 and 5:23 marks, GHS’s Kristen Combs and Strickle both hit 3-Point Baskets. After three, consecutive turnovers (XHS-2 and GHS-1), the Lady Rams nailed another 3-Point Basket (4:19). The Lady Rams now led 29-5. From 4:01 to 3:00, the Lady Buccaneers commit 2-Turnovers. The Lady Rams commit 1-Turnover. However, XHS’s Trinity Morton manages to obtain 2-Points. During the final 2:40, GHS went on an 8-0 Scoring Run. Four players (Saunders; Olivia Maxwell; Strickle; and Sonneman) each scored 2-Points. XHS’s 2-Turnovers assisted the process. At the end of the 2nd Quarter, GHS led XHS 37-7.

For the Lady Buccaneers, everything that can go wrong has gone wrong. Nothing (whatsoever) is working. As far as the Lady Rams go, turnovers and fouls are their only issues. However, the Lady Rams’ deficiencies are not hurting the team. The Lady Rams’ use of the 3-Point Shot has been deadly! That is the main reason why GHS possesses a 30-Point Lead. As the 3rd Quarter got underway, XHS went on a 4-0 run. At 5:39, Combs ended the Lady Buccaneers’ run. She hit a 3-Point Basket. Each team went on to commit 2-Turnovers. Then, each team made 2-Foul Shots. With 3:44 remaining in the 3rd Quarter, Combs nailed another 3-Point Basket. For the Lady Rams, Combs’ conversion ended up being a part of a 6-0 run. Strickle scored 3-Points too. By the score of 50-13, GHS still led XHS.

During the remaining 2:09, XHS outscored GHS 8-2. At the end of the 3rd Quarter, GHS leads XHS 52-21. After the start of the 4th Quarter, the Lady Rams turned the ball over. From 7:35 to 5:45, the Lady Buccaneers outscored the Lady Rams 7-4. With 4:47 remaining in the game, a Timeout was called. Thus far (in the 4th Quarter), both teams have been unable to make Foul Shots. Although failing to successfully do that is not hurting GHS, it is hurting XHS. Forty seconds after the Timeout (4:07), XHS turned the ball over. From 4:02 to 3:32, GHS outscored XHS 4-3. For their respective team, Strickle and Morton each scored 3-Points. For the remainder of the game, XHS committed 5-Turnovers. GHS had 1-Turnover. The Lady Buccaneers’ Free Throw Shooting Problems continued. Strickle successfully converted the Lady Rams’ lone Foul Shot. GHS outscored XHS 7-1. By the Final Score of 67-32, GHS earned “Bragging Rights” for 1-Year!

Elks Trample Lady Buccaneers

Coming into Wednesday, December 9, 2015, The Xenia High School (XHS) Lady Buccaneers’ Basketball Team possessed an Overall 2015-2016 Season Record of 0-5. On 12/09/2015, XHS hosted The Springfield High School (SHS) Lady Wildcats. At the conclusion of that night’s contest, the Lady Buccaneers would be winless no more. By the Final Score of 64-52, XHS picked up its first victory. Guess what? Yours truly (Darryl L. McGee) WAS NOT in attendance! Due to a previously-scheduled commitment with “Xenia’s Word On The Street” (www.xeniaword.com), I was unable to attend the game. I will be completely honest. After I was informed of the game’s final result, I was upset with myself. The Lady Buccaneers finally win a game, and I was not present to witness it. Up until 12/09/2015, XHS has suffered through a very difficult season. With the exception of an Opening Night Loss (to Shawnee High School 45-34), the Lady Buccaneers have been blown out in four, consecutive games. After dealing with so many disappointing loses, the Lady Buccaneers could have easily given up and quit! Instead, the young women decided to continue the mission. Until the first victory was secured, the ladies were going to continue to fight on. For as long as I can remember, I have always heard people say the following. “The true nature of a person can be defined by how that same individual deals with adversity.” That statement applies to the XHS Lady Buccaneers! The team has heart. Regardless of whatever anyone thinks, a tough heart can never be held down.

Tonight (Saturday, December 12, 2015), the XHS Lady Buccaneers host Greater Western Ohio Conference (GWOC) Powerhouse: The Centerville High School (CHS) Lady Elks. For the Lady Buccaneers, will their wave of momentum play a role in tonight’s game? We are about to find out! Centerville won the game’s tip-off. From 7:43 to 5:46, the Lady Elks went on a 9-0 Scoring Run. Xenia committed 2-Turnovers. For the first points of the game, Weston Minnich nailed a 3-Point Basket (7:43). At the 5:28 mark, Ahzjai Files picked up the Lady Buccaneers’ first points. Files made a 2-Point Basket. With 5:11 on the clock, Minnich hit another 3-Point Basket. Then, her teammate Victoria Harrison nailed a 3-Point Basket. At 4:36, a Timeout was called. CHS leads XHS 15-2. Centerville is dominating this game! The Lady Elks have been the closest thing to perfect as a team can be.

Five seconds after the Timeout (4:31), Xenia turned the ball over. The Lady Buccaneers’ Turnover led to Centerville picking up 2-Points. Logane Brazile made 2-Foul Shots. XHS soon picked up 2-Points. Ella Welsh made a 2-Point Basket. Minnich countered with a 2-Point Basket. Then, the Lady Buccaneers obtained two more points (3:35). With 2:18 remaining in the 1st Quarter, Brazile made 2-Foul Shots. From 2:12 to 1:18, the Lady Buccaneers committed 2-Turnovers. The Lady Elks had 1-Turnover. CHS was penalized for a Defensive Foul too. With 1:10 on the scoreboard, XHS’s Jada Wallace stepped to the Free Throw Line. She successfully made 1-Foul Shot. A Timeout was then called. CHS’ lead was now 21-7. Before the end of the 1st Quarter, Brazile made a 2-Point Basket. XHS followed that up with a Traveling Violation. At the end of the 1st Quarter, CHS leads XHS 23-7.

Centerville is doing everything right. Xenia is trying to do that too. Unfortunately, the Lady Buccaneers cannot get anything going. At times, they seemed to be extremely confused. At the 6:37 mark of the 2nd Quarter, Harrison made 2-Foul Shots. From 5:53 to 4:45, each team committed 2-Turnovers. With 4:40 remaining in the 2nd Quarter, the Lady Elks’ Kasey Perry made a 2-Point Basket. Each team went on to obtain a Steal. At 4:00, Brazile made a 2-Point Basket. Then, a Timeout was called. CHS leads XHS 29-7. With 3:29 on the scoreboard, Harrison made a 2-Point Basket. In just a little over one minute (2:22), XHS’s Lizzie Abbott picked up 2-Points. From 2:10 to 36.3 Seconds, each team committed 2-Turnovers. At the 1:16 mark, CHS’s Meghan Mattingly made 2-Foul Shots.

With 3.9 Seconds remaining in the First Half, a Technical Foul was called on Centerville’s Blythe Wesney. Xenia’s Welsh stepped to the Free Throw Line. She went on to successfully complete 2-Foul Shots. At the end of the 2nd Quarter, CHS leads XHS 33-11. The story of the First Half is simply the following. Centerville’s Defense has completely smothered Xenia’s Offense. The Lady Buccaneers cannot get any type of momentum going. That is exactly how much Centerville’s Defense has locked them down. The Lady Elks’ Defense has been sticking to Xenia’s Offense like glue. The Lady Elks have made mistakes. However, Xenia has not had much success with capitalizing off of Centerville’s mistakes. The only thing which has stopped Centerville (at various times) has been the Lady Elks themselves. The Lady Buccaneers sure cannot stop what the Elks are bringing. As far as “Speed” goes, Centerville has it. The Lady Elks are doing a great job of using it. At times, Centerville has been too fast for Xenia. The Lady Buccaneers were unable to keep up.

At 7:11 of the 3rd Quarter, Xenia’s Breanna Burnette made a 2-Point Basket. Centerville’s Jasmine Broner soon picked up 2-Points. Sandwiched in-between a series of Turnovers, Brazile makes 1-Foul Shot. CHS commits 1-Turnover. XHS commits 3-Turnovers. With 21.7 on the clock, Mattingly makes a 2-Point Basket. That would be the final points scored in the 3rd Quarter. At the end of the 3rd Quarter, CHS leads XHS 47-21. The Lady Elks are still in firm control of this game.

From 7:48 to 6:16 of the 4th Quarter, Centerville committed 2-Turnovers. Xenia had 1-Turnover. At 7:30, the Lady Buccaneers’ Infiniti Carr made 1-Foul Shot. After CHS turned the ball over, the Lady Elks soon had the ball again. Brazile makes a 2-Point Basket (5:53). Each team proceeds to go on a 3-0 run. At the 4:11 mark, the Lady Elks stole the ball. Five seconds later (4:06), Lizzie Steiner makes a 2-Point Basket. During the play, she was fouled. After she successfully makes her lone Foul Shot, CHS takes a 30-Point Lead (55-25) over XHS. With 3:38 on the clock, the Lady Buccaneers turned the ball over. XHS soon found itself with the ball again. The possession ended when Carr makes a 2-Point Basket. From 3:05 to 2:35, four, consecutive Foul Shots were made. CHS’s Alexis Hutchison makes two of them. Stevens makes the remaining Foul Shots.

After the Lady Buccaneers turned the ball over, the Lady Elks’ Alyssa Walker picked up 2-Points. Twenty seconds later (2:03), Burnette makes a 2-Point Basket. From 1:50 to 1:22, Centerville goes on a 5-0 run. Blythe Wesney nailed a 3-Point Basket. From 1:13 to 55.5 Seconds, Cora Stevens goes on a 5-0 run. At the 55.5 mark, she hit a 3-Point Basket. In a dominating fashion, the Final Score was 64-36.

CSU Wins Overtime Thriller

Any aspect of life is about learning. Also, it is about practice. Everything has its advantages and disadvantages. You just have to find out what exactly will work best for you and/or your particular situation. Conformity is a major aspect of life. If one is not willing to conform, that same individual will never be able to advance and prosper. No human being on earth is PERFECT! Therefore, I realize the following. Conformity is not always something that you want to do. It can be something that must be done. If you have read some of my past columns, you probably have witnessed me repeatedly say the following. “I will be the first person to admit that I am not perfect.” Within my lifetime, I have dealt with a lot of adversity. College; A Failing Marriage; Employment Searching; Automobile Deficiencies; Financial Difficulties; Death/Loss Of Close Loved Ones; Obesity; etc. all are just some of the issues which my life has struggled with. You name it, and I probably have dealt with it. Of course, Drugs; Alcohol; and Crime are issues that I have never participated in. My life has never reached that desperate and downtrodden area.

Right about now, the following question is probably on your mind. What does anything which I have spoken about have to do with SPORTS? Allow me to explain. Some of the previously-mentioned issues are still relevant in my life today. Regardless of whether or not they still exist within my life, one thing is for sure. I have learned something from each of my negative experiences. Some of what I have learned has been good, and some of what I have learned has been bad. In each of my situations, some type of conformity has existed. My life perfectly relates to THE Central State University’s Men’s Basketball Team’s 2015-2016 Season. All season long, the Marauders have struggled. As of late, the team has started to get on the right path to success. Obviously, the team has learned some from its mistakes. How do I know? On the court, the team has shown vast improvement. The team is somewhat aware of what does and does not work. The team is not perfect. It is still not without fault. For the Marauders, every day continues to be a learning experience. That will remain the case.

Today (Saturday, January 9, 2016) will be a brand-new experience. This afternoon, the Morehouse College (MC) Maroon Tigers will be visiting CSU’s Beacom-Lewis Gymnasium. Morehouse won the game’s tip-off. At 19:45, Central State’s Defense almost obtained an Interception. However, the ball just missed a defender’s hands. The Maroon Tigers soon missed a shot. With 19:18 on the clock, the Marauders made a 2-Point Basket. A short time later (18:45), CSU’s Hosie Smith, Jr. picked up 2-Points. At the 18:29 mark, MC finally got onto the scoreboard. The team nailed a 3-Point Basket. Before a Timeout at 17:35, CSU committed 1-Turnover. However, Jeremy Brown managed to make a 2-Point Basket. At 17:25, the Marauders’ Tom Johnson made a good Defensive Play. He knocked the ball away from an Offensive Player. Johnson’s play ended with CSU obtaining a Steal.

From 17:02 to 15:47, Morehouse committed 1-Turnover. Central State outscored the Maroon Tigers 6-2. At 15:39, a Media Timeout was called. Central State has come out with a lot of fire. The Marauders are playing just like they are extremely angry and/or irritated about something. This past Thursday’s loss (to Clark-Atlanta) seems to be bothering them. The pace of the game has been fast. With 15:39 on the clock, MC’s Ayinde Russell made 2-Foul Shots. The Marauders went on to outscore the Maroon Tigers 7-5. During the scoring, CSU committed 2-Turnovers. At the 11:32 mark, a Timeout was called. CSU leads MC 19-12. After seeming like they were making every shot, the Marauders are starting to miss shots. However, they are still doing what they need to do to stay ahead. It will be interesting to see if that remains the case.

Eleven seconds after the Timeout (11:21), Morehouse committed an Offensive Foul (Turnover). At 11:00, Smith made a 2-Point Basket. How would the Maroon Tigers respond? From 10:37 to 8:47, MC went on a 9-0 Scoring Run. During the run, Central State committed 2-Turnovers. The game is now tied 21-21. With 8:18 remaining in the First Half, the Marauders ended the Maroon Tigers’ run. Johnson nailed a 3-Point Basket. At the 7:49 mark, a Media Timeout was called. Morehouse has gotten the momentum on its side. At one point, they tied the game. Tom Johnson ended the tie. He nailed a 3-Point Basket. Central State has the lead back. Of course, Morehouse is nipping at the Marauders’ heels.

From 7:22 to 5:20, Morehouse committed 2-Turnovers. Central State committed 1-Turnover. The Marauders outscored the Maroon Tigers 6-2. At 5:00, Russell hit a 3-Point Basket. MC went on to commit 3-Turnovers. However, points scored were even. Each team scored 2-Points. With 2:46 remaining in the First Half, a Timeout was called. CSU leads MC 32-28. Central State is in control of the momentum again. However, the control is not firm. Morehouse is not too far behind. During the 1st Half’s final 2:33, CSU outscored MC 6-3. CSU’s Robert Konteh had 2-Hard Blocks. At the end of the First Half, Central State leads Morehouse 38-31. Can CSU keep the lead?

At Halftime, Central State has the lead. However, a good question is simply the following. Will Central State be able to maintain its lead, and properly finish the game? If that happens, Central State will win this game. In its previous Home Games, Central State has had trouble with closing out games. The Marauders would allow leads to wither away. CSU would lose control of games. The opposing teams would capitalize on those severe mistakes which the Marauders would make. As the Second Half got underway, Central State had possession of the ball. Immediately, the Marauders outscored the Maroon Tigers 10-6. Five different players (Tre’ Edwards; Robert Konteh; Tom Johnson; Hosie Smith, Jr.; and Anthony Chester each scored. Chester made a 3-Point Basket. For the Maroon Tigers, Anthony Farrar scored 4-Points. At 15:28, a Media Timeout was called. CSU leads MC 48-37. CSU is not playing today. The team has its foot all the way on the gas pedal.

Shortly after the Media Timeout (14:58), Morehouse nailed a 3-Point Basket. Central State went on to commit 2-Turnovers. The Maroon Tigers committed 1-Turnover. Scoring was fairly close. MC outscored the Marauders 5-4. Javarius Gay hit a 3-Point Basket. At 11:15, a Timeout was called. CSU led MC 52-45. After the Timeout, the Maroon Tigers went on an 8-0 Scoring Run. Michael Scott nailed two, consecutive 3-Point Baskets. MC now possessed a 1-Point Lead (53-52). The Maroon Tigers’ lead lasted 10-Seconds. At 9:10, Chester made a 3-Point Basket. 1:10 later (8:00), Edwards made 2-Foul Shots. Before a Timeout at 7:26, MC’s Michael Hall made a 2-Point Basket. MC trails CSU 57-55.

After the latest Timeout, Central State’s Sean Cassidy, Jr. made 1-Foul Shot. Then, Morehouse’s Tyrone Brown completed a 3-Point Play. Going into a Timeout (5:46), the game is tied 58-58. From 5:32 to 3:46, each team committed 1-Turnover. Scoring was close. The Maroon Tigers outscored the Marauders 5-4. With 3:46 remaining in the game, a Timeout was called. MC possessed a 1-Point Lead (63-62). After the Timeout, CSU went on to outscore MC 6-4. The Marauders’ Dymiere Finch scored 3-Points. With 36.0 Seconds remaining in the game, a Full Timeout was called.  Eight seconds after the Timeout (28.0), the Maroon Tigers turned the ball over (Lane Violation). At 22.9 Seconds, CSU’s Sterling Gilmore made 2-Foul Shots. At the 12.6 Seconds mark, MC’s Michael Scott nailed a 3-Point Basket. His big conversion tied the game 70-70. At the end of Regulation Play, the game was still tied 70-70. The game is headed to Overtime Play.

Central State University won the Overtime Tip-Off. Each team went on to commit 1-Turnover. Then, Central State flexed its muscles. From 4:01 to 2:25, CSU went on a 6-0 Scoring Run. With 1:50 remaining in Overtime, a Timeout was called. The Marauders possessed a 4-Point Lead (77-73). After the Timeout, CSU’s Tom Johnson outscored Morehouse College 4-0. At 57.0 Seconds, Morehouse’s Robert Askew made 2-Foul Shots. At the 55.6 mark, CSU’s Sterling Gilmore made 2-Foul Shots. MC’s Anthony Farrar comes right back, and he nails a 3-Point Basket. After Gilmore makes 1-Foul Shot, the Maroon Tigers’ Ayinde Russell hit a 3-Point Basket. During the final 39.1 Seconds of Overtime, CSU went on a 4-0 run. Finally, the game came to a conclusion. No more play would be needed. At the end of an extremely hard-fought game, Central State arose victoriously. The game’s Final Score was 88-81.

CSU Wins Exciting Game

Three days ago (Wednesday, October 21, 2015), I covered a basketball game for: “Xenia’s Word On The Street” (www.xeniaword.com). Of course, that game occurred inside of Central State University’s (CSU) Beacom-Lewis Gymnasium (BLG). BLG is my present location. Like on Wednesday, today (Saturday, October 24, 2015), I am here to see CSU’s Women’s Basketball Team play. The Lady Marauders’ opponent will be the Urbana University (UU) Lady Blue Knights. Once again, I will be witnessing another Preseason Game. I still have to get used to covering basketball (instead of football). Believe it or not, the transition can be somewhat difficult. I am not saying that the transition is extremely hard and/or impossible to accomplish. For the past five months, I have been in football stadiums. I have been covering numerous Semi-Pro; High School; and College Football Games. Now, the sport of “basketball” must become my main focus. However, I am still in the midst of covering football games. Therefore, I must be able to switch between the two sports. Now, I only have two more football games left to cover. That is not too bad. Then, my full-attention becomes basketball. Of course, the entire situation has a positive aspect. As far as basketball goes, games are held indoors. Football games are held outside. When covering football games at all times, a Sports Journalist must be aware of the present (and future) weather conditions. That is a big difference!

Central State won the game’s tip-off. The Lady Marauders passed the ball around the perimeter. Eventually, Jordyn Bond made a 2-Point Basket (9:44). After Urbana turned the ball over, Bond found the ball in her hands again. This time, she was fouled. After Bond successfully converted 2-Free Throw Attempts, CSU led 4-0. At 9:11, the Lady Marauders’ Defense intercepted a pass. However, the offense was unable to score. At the 8:43 mark, UU’s Megan Beachy nailed a 3-Point Basket. The Lady Blue Knights went on to commit 1-Turnover. The Lady Marauders would not be outdone. They committed 2-Turnovers. Before a Timeout (7:13), CSU’s Kourtni Perry was at the basket. She went on to make a 2-Point Basket. CSU’s lead was now 6-3. The game has started out extremely fast. I am having a hard time keeping up with the game and writing (both at the same time). Both teams are fast.

Shortly after the Timeout, CSU’s Bria Spaulding stole the ball. Bond ended up at the Free Throw Line. At 6:40, she made 2-Foul Shots. Four seconds after Bond’s conversions, UU turned the ball over again. Once again, Bond found herself at the Free Throw Line (6:22). Her 2-Foul Shots were good. Twenty seconds later (6:02), Beachy made 2-Foul Shots. After the Lady Marauders turned the ball over (Traveling), the Lady Blue Knights’ Kennedy Boggs successfully converted 2-Free Throw Attempts. CSU turned the ball over again (5:32). Then, UU had its turn (5:19). With 5:05 remaining in the 1st Quarter, UU made a 2-Point Basket. The Lady Marauders turned the ball over again. This time, the Lady Blue Knights’ Erin Morrow made them pay. She hit a 3-Point Basket (4:39). At that point, a Timeout was called. UU has gained control of the “Speed Factor.” By the score of 12-10, the Lady Blue Knights have taken the lead.

With 4:20 remaining in the 1st Quarter, Perry was positioned at the basket. With two defenders tightly guarding her, she still managed to make a 2-Point Basket. Thirteen seconds later (4:07), Morrow nailed a 3-Point Basket. At the 2:11 mark, Bond hit a 3-Point Basket. From 1:59 to near 1:25, UU made two 2-Point Baskets. CSU made one 2-Point Basket. From 1:08 to 21.1 Seconds, players went to the Free Throw Line four times. After all Foul Shots were taken, the game was tied 20-20. With 14.0 Seconds left on the clock, UU’s Ariana Harper made a 2-Point Basket. At the end of the 1st Quarter, UU led CSU by 2-Points (22-20). After the 2nd Quarter got underway, one of the Lady Blue Knights’ players was driving to the basket. As this particular player put up a shot, Bond blocked it. The ball went out of bounds. UU maintained possession. Unfortunately, the Lady Blue Knights were unable to score.

From 9:22 to 6:44, UU outscored CSU 8-6. Beachy nailed two 3-Point Baskets. Perry made two 2-Point Baskets. A Timeout was called. By the score of 30-26, CSU trailed UU. After the Timeout, the Lady Blue Knights committed 2-Turnovers and 1-Offensive Foul. Before another Timeout was called (4:52), the Lady Marauders outscored the Lady Blue Knights 4-2. Also, the Lady Blue Knights turned the ball over. After the latest Timeout, the teams went on to match one another in points (4-4). For the Lady Marauders, Meshia Smith scored all 4-Points. At the 2:13 mark, Beachy nailed a 3-Point Basket. From 1:56 to 1:11, CSU went on a 7-0 run. During the final 37.4 Seconds, each team scored 2-Points. At the end of the First Half, CSU possessed a 2-Point Lead (43-41). UU has taken over control of the game’s speed.

The Lady Blue Knights put themselves into good positions. As a direct result, they were able to make adequate shots and passes. UU’s footwork is top-notch. The Lady Blue Knights’ ability to make the 3-Point Shot has been deadly. Definitely, they have used that aspect to their advantage. UU passes the ball and uses good footwork to get out of bad situations. Also, they have utilized those aspects to counter CSU’s tight Defensive Coverage. During the 2nd Quarter’s final 2:00, the Lady Marauders turned up their intensity and strengthened their defense. Unfortunately, CSU keeps missing shots. After the start of the 3rd Quarter, UU had possession of the ball. However, the Lady Blue Knights did not score. Then, both teams developed turnover issues. With 8:39 on the clock, UU’s Jazymn Haley made a 2-Point Basket. Ten seconds later (8:29), Bond goes straight to the basket (after she obtains a Steal). Beachy comes back with 2-Foul Shots. Then, each team commits 1-Turnover.

From 6:27 to 4:56, CSU went on a 7-2 run. At the 4:44 mark, a Timeout was called.  After the Timeout, UU’s Boggs outscored CSU 5-0. From 2:58 to 0.4 Seconds, CSU outscored UU 8-5. The Lady Blue Knights should consider themselves lucky. During the time frame, they committed 4-Turnovers. The Lady Marauders should have scored more points. However, CSU had a problem with making Foul Shots. At the end of the 3rd Quarter, CSU led UU 60-57. At 9:54 of the 4th Quarter, UU’s Danie Shafer made a 2-Point Basket. The Lady Marauders proceeded to go on a 7-0 run. Perry scored 4-Points. Bond hit a 3-Point Basket. The Lady Blue Knights were not going to be left out. They went on a 7-0 run too.

The Scoring Runs did not end. From 6:08 to 5:17, CSU outscored UU 8-2. With 4:49 remaining in the game, a Timeout was called. CSU led UU 75-68. After the Timeout (from 4:28 to 1:20), each team committed 4-Turnovers. During the process, CSU outscored UU 7-2. During the final 1:07, Beachy outscored CSU 6-4. She nailed two 3-Point Baskets. For CSU, Ghameerah McCullers scored 3-Points. By the Final Score of 86-76, CSU went on to win the game.  Today is the last time which I will see the Lady Marauders play. Saturday, November 28, 2015, is the date of the Lady Marauders’ next Home Game. That game will be a 2015-2016 Regular Season Game. CSU’s opponent will be Slippery Rock University. I will be eagerly awaiting that contest. During this preseason, the Lady Marauders have looked really good. Since the last time I saw the young women (back in March at the GMAC Tournament), the team has vastly improved. Will the improvements continue into the regular season? Definitely, I am eager to find out!
