Red Wolves Run Wilberforce

“You should never get too happy about something. If you do, you may very well end up disappointed.” For as long as I can remember, my mother has repeatedly stated that phrase to me. Up until this very minute, she still speaks it. Today (Tuesday, November 24, 2015), my mother’s words could not be any more relevant. Ever since I first took a look at Wilberforce University’s (WU) Women’s Basketball Schedule, one game date emphatically caught my attention. Even before the schedule was released, I could not wait to see one team come to The Alumni Multiplex (AM). The Indiana University East (IUE) Lady Red Wolves are the team which I have been eagerly awaiting to appear. During the 2014-2015 Season (last season), I saw the Lady Red Wolves play twice. IUE played at both Central State University and WU. After watching the team play, it quickly became one of my favorites which to keep up with. All season long, I kept up with the Lady Red Wolves. Via the Internet; Social Media; Video; etc., that process was made possible. The Lady Red Wolves’ Roster contains one name which has received much of my attention. In all of college basketball, this young lady has become one of my Favorite College Basketball Players! MACKENZIE CAMPBELL is the young lady who I speak of. After stepping into the AM, I quickly became disappointed. In the ensuing game, I was informed that Campbell WOULD NOT be playing! Not only would Campbell not be playing in this game, but she also would not be playing in any games. For the remainder of the season, Campbell would be out with an injury!

While I was already aware of Campbell’s injury, I was hoping that she would be playing in this game. Nonetheless, I fully expect the Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Red Wolves to play a good game. Hopefully, Mackenzie Campbell gets herself all healed up. Next season, I hope to see her on the court again. Wilberforce won the game’s tip-off. At 9:44, Brieanna Carter found herself at the basket. To her dismay, she missed a 2-Point Basket. At 9:25, Indiana University East’s Kaitlin Dobbins missed a 2-Point Basket too. Her shot rattled around the rim. Then, it rolled out. WU’s Kendra Moss soon missed a 2-Point Basket (8:44). Ten seconds later (8:34), the Lady Red Wolves’ Tia King made 2-Foul Shots. With 7:45 on the clock, the Lady Bulldogs’ Diamond Wright obtained a Steal. Twelve seconds later (7:33), Moss scored the game’s first Field Goal. She made a 2-Point Basket. IUE’s Da’Sha Boyd soon intercepted a pass. However, the Lady Red Wolves’ Offense turned the ball over.

From 6:35 to 6:13, WU outscored IUE 4-0. Brooklynn Peterson hit a 3-Point Basket. After the Lady Red Wolves turned the ball over, IUE soon found itself with possession of the ball again. At the 5:33 mark, King nailed a 3-Point Basket. IUE’s Bailey Dreiman went on to steal the ball. However, the Lady Red Wolves were unable to score. With 4:58 remaining in the 1st Quarter, Wright picked up 2-Points. Dobbins countered with a 3-Point Basket. At 4:18, Moss committed an Offensive Foul. However, WU was not hurt. The Lady Bulldogs ended up going on a 4-0 Scoring Run. Da’Sha’Nay Corley scored all 4-Points. From 3:02 to 2:45, three things happened. First, Moss blocked a shot (while positioned at the basket). Next, WU obtained a Steal. Finally, IUE’s Defense stole the ball. At the 2:39 mark, King made a 2-Point Basket.

WU was soon penalized for Traveling (Turnover). That turnover led to King nailing a 3-Point Basket. That successful conversion gave IUE its first lead of the game (13-12). With 2:05 on the scoreboard, a Timeout was called. Coming into this game, I fully expected the Lady Red Wolves to be faster. They are the faster team. However, the Lady Bulldogs have taken control of the game’s fast-pace. They have been the faster team. After the Timeout, WU went on a 4-0 run. Before the Lady Bulldogs turned the ball over (27.2 Seconds), IUE outscored WU 5-0. Dobbins hit a 3-Point Basket. With 3.8 Seconds remaining in the quarter, King attacked the basket. She made a 2-Point Basket. At the end of the 1st Quarter, IUE leads WU 20-16. As the 2nd Quarter got underway, WU had possession of the ball.

At 9:52, Tivia Hylton made a 2-Point Basket.  IUE comes right back with a 2-Point Basket. From 9:00 to 6:53, WU went on a 7-2 run. At 7:34, Moss blocked a Shot Attempt. Then, she stole the ball. She ended up scoring a 2-Point Basket. The Lady Bulldogs’ run only served to make the Lady Red Wolves mad. IUE went on an 11-2 run (6:47 to 4:04). During the run, IUE committed 2-Turnovers. WU committed 1-Turnover. Sarah Cook scored 4-Points. After the run, Moss made a 2-Point Basket. Then, IUE’s Da’Sha Boyd nailed a 3-Point Basket. After the Lady Bulldogs committed 1-Turnover, WU outscored IUE 8-2. Moss scored 4-Points. WU trimmed IUE’s lead to 3-Points (40-37). With 52.2 Seconds remaining before the Halftime Break, IUE called a Timeout.

The Lady Red Wolves had separated themselves from the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Red Wolves had a 10-Point Lead. However, WU has cut the lead down to 3-Points (40-37). At the 42.6 Seconds mark, IUE’s Da’Sha Boyd made 2-Foul Shots. Moss countered with a 3-Point Basket. At the end of the 2nd Quarter (and First Half), IUE led WU 42-40. I am very surprised that WU has been able to run with IUE. The Lady Red Wolves are a fast team that knows exactly how to get up-and-down the court. However, for the most part, the Lady Bulldogs have possessed the speed advantage. IUE has caught up with WU. Now, the Lady Red Wolves have taken the lead. Of course, it is a very slim one. The Lady Bulldogs just will not go away. After Halftime, IUE started with the ball’s possession. Ten seconds into the 3rd Quarter (9:50), the Lady Red Wolves’ Keragan Niehoff made a 2-Point Basket.

The Lady Bulldogs’ Peterson countered with a 2-Point Basket too. After King successfully made 2-Foul Shots, WU went on to call a Timeout (6:49). Before the Timeout, WU’s Defense made a good play. One of IUE’s players was attacking the basket. The Lady Bulldogs blocked the Shot Attempt. At 7:01, Carter picked up 2-Points. Going into the Timeout, IUE led WU 46-44. From 6:06 to 1:54, WU turned the ball over twice. IUE essentially put the game away. The Lady Red Wolves went on a powerful 18-4 run. Cook scored 7-Points. Niehoff scored 4-Points. King scored 5-Points. With 1:47 remaining in the 3rd Quarter, WU called a Timeout. After the Timeout, WU went on to commit 3-Turnovers. IUE outscored WU 4-2. King scored all four of the Lady Red Wolves’ points. At the end of the 3rd Quarter, the Lady Red Wolves led the Lady Bulldogs 68-50.

From 9:07 to 8:19 (of the 4th Quarter), IUE committed 2-Turnovers. WU committed 1-Turnover. Peterson scored 2-Points. From 8:10 to 4:37, IUE outscored WU 7-4. Cook scored 4-Points. During the final 4:25, WU outscored IUE 9-7. Wright intercepted a pass.  Moss scored 4-Points. King scored 3-Points. The Lady Red Wolves turned the ball over again. The Lady Bulldogs were penalized for Traveling (Turnover). During this time frame, the Lady Bulldogs put up a tough fight. However, it all meant nothing. In the 3rd Quarter, the Lady Red Wolves had already put this game out-of-reach. They were not going to relinquish their lead. In the 4th Quarter, I honestly believe that IUE took its foot off of the gas pedal. The Lady Red Wolves had loosened up on their strong Defensive Pressure. In order to preserve the win in the 4th Quarter, IUE did just enough to stay ahead. By the Final Score of 82-65, IUE defeated WU. The Lady Red Wolves had completed a 2-Game Sweep of the Lady Bulldogs (in the 2015-2016 Season).
